A mentoring and career networking program for early career scholars to conduct inclusive and equitable research.

Housed in the Center on Equity Research, NORC Equity Scholars supports advanced doctoral students, postdocs, and early career professionals in a rigorous social science research project. Scholars build skills and expand their ability to conduct inclusive and equitable (I&E) research, including culturally responsive research and evaluation (CREE). More broadly, the Equity Scholars program aims to expand the pipeline of historically marginalized, minoritized, and excluded populations pursuing careers in social science research.

Equity scholars receive mentoring and participate in career networking opportunities under the supervision of NORC staff. Additionally, NORC staff have much to learn from the Equity Scholars. The program supports research aimed at enhancing the understanding of, creation, or assessment of interventions, policies, and practices meant to eliminate disparities and reduce inequality in various dimensions. These dimensions include race, ethnicity, national origin, language, color, disability, gender, age, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, socioeconomic status, veteran status, and family structures.

2023-24 NORC Equity Scholars

The 2024 NORC Equity Scholars will conduct research to support the Youth and Teen Math Mindset Study, funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Scholars will use an existing dataset from the Study to conduct secondary data analyses to explore the math experiences and mindsets of historically marginalized and/or minoritized youth and teens.

Program Goals

Training and Supporting the Next Generation of I&E Scholars

Research scholars collaborate with NORC researchers conducting I&E research, including CREE. The NORC researchers help guide, refine, and support the Scholars’ secondary data analyses. Scholars also receive support and mentorship from experts in the Center on Equity Research and NORC’s Education & Child Development and Statistics & Data Science departments.

Fostering the Exchange of Ideas, Research, and Information

Equity Scholars participate in weekly calls with their NORC professionals to share their research designs, plans for data analysis, and findings. Scholars will present findings to NORC’s Center on Equity Research and Education & Child Development department, as well as other NORC departments and partners.
