Michael Steffan
Michael is a statistician at NORC at the University of Chicago, specializing in small area estimation, complex survey design and weighting, imputation, and data analysis for government and public-interest research.
At NORC, Michael plays a key role in the sampling and design implementation for surveys such as the Survey of Doctorate Recipients and the Healthy Illinois Survey. He leads complex survey weighting efforts across multiple initiatives, including several Jewish community studies, and applies advanced analytic methods such as double robust difference-in-differences, latent class analysis, small area estimation, and interrupted time series. His small area estimation work has supported projects including Entrepreneurship in the Population (EPOP) and the Healthy Illinois Survey. Michael’s contributions span the full survey lifecycle—from frame construction and data collection strategies to analytic reporting.
Before joining NORC, Michael supported or led the development of 20 clinical reports and corresponding data reviews across 11 clinical trials. His work covered diverse therapeutic areas including immunology, oncology, pulmonology, and infectious diseases, in collaboration with six pharmaceutical sponsors.
Michael also serves as adjunct faculty at the University of North Carolina’s Gillings School of Global Public Health, where he teaches courses in data analysis.
