Research Scientist

The Bridge at NORC

Stefan is a mixed-methods researcher whose work focuses on the well-being of LGBTQ communities.

Stefan brings over a decade of experience designing and implementing qualitative and mixed-methods research projects involving LGBTQ populations that span the domains of law, health, and education. He is currently leading the first-ever study to draw on a nationally representative probability sample to understand LGBTQ people’s experiences with and attitudes toward law enforcement.

Prior to joining NORC, Stefan held postdoctoral positions at Northwestern University and the University of California, Irvine, and worked as a specialist in online education. During his time at Northwestern and UCI, Stefan published his award-winning book, Sorting Sexualities: Expertise and the Politics of Legal Classification, which examines the role of different forms of scientific expertise in legal decision-making regarding sexuality.

Sorting Sexualities has been recognized by the American Sociological Association with the Sociology of Law Section’s Distinguished Book Award as well as the Sociology of Sexualities Distinguished Book Award.
