NORC Welcomes Ting Yan as Vice President of Methodology & Quantitative Social Sciences

CHICAGO, September 17, 2024 – NORC at the University of Chicago is pleased to welcome Ting Yan as vice president of the Methodology & Quantitative Social Sciences (MQSS) department.
Yan is a recognized leader in survey methodology with more than 25 years of experience conducting survey research and designing and implementing large-scale federal surveys. Her expertise includes questionnaire design and evaluation, survey protocol development, monitoring, evaluating, and improving data quality, data visualization, and complex survey data analysis.
“Ting’s leadership comes at a pivotal time as we look to expand our capabilities and implement advanced strategies that will help us thrive in an increasingly complex data environment,” said Leah Christian, senior vice president of MQSS. “Her deep expertise in survey methodology, coupled with her innovative approach to data quality and multimode survey designs, will be instrumental in driving MQSS’s growth and evolution. We are confident that her expertise will help our department to set new benchmarks in delivering high-quality, reliable data and insights to our clients.”
Yan previously joined NORC in 2007 as a survey methodologist. She then held an academic role before joining Westat as a senior survey methodologist. During her 10 years at Westat, she advanced to associate director and vice president. She is currently an adjunct faculty member for the Joint Program in Survey Methodology (JPSM) and the Program in Survey and Data Science at the University of Michigan, teaching graduate-level courses and serving on dissertation committees.

Yan is a long-time member of the American Statistical Association (ASA) and the American Association for Public Opinion Research (AAPOR). She served on the executive committee of the European Survey Research Association, chaired AAPOR's Diversity Subcommittee, and was the co-editor-in-chief for the Journal of Survey Statistics and Methodology. She served on the organizing committee for the 2024 International Total Survey Error Workshop and is currently serving on the 2030 Census Advisory Committee.
Yan holds a PhD in survey methodology from the University of Maryland.
