Rachel Sparkman

Rachel uses mixed-methods techniques to study public opinion, migration, and population.

Rachel is a research scientist in the Economics, Justice & Society department at NORC, where she oversees survey research and conducts empirical analyses. Across multiple NORC projects, she contributes to survey instrument design and field implementation, manages research data, conducts quantitative analyses, and applies demographic methods to population research.

Rachel currently serves as a research lead for the General Social Survey (GSS), contributing across the full survey lifecycle, including questionnaire development, data processing, and dissemination. She also leads methodological research on survey experiments and other GSS research topics. Rachel reviews and processes applications for access to restricted GSS data and supports the maintenance and revision of GSS sensitive data products.

Rachel provides demographic and quantitative expertise to the City of Chicago Census & Data Collaboration project. She analyzes historical population counts and estimates to support the accuracy of census-related data products. She previously provided similar analytic support to the State of Illinois Census & Data Collaboration, examining statewide population distributions and migration patterns.

Outside of NORC, Rachel has more than a decade of university-level instructional experience, with subject-matter expertise spanning introductory sociology, the sociology of marriage and family, population dynamics, and rural sociology courses.
