NORC at the University of Chicago conducts survey operations for the EIA-878 “Motor Gasoline Price” and EIA-888 “On-Highway Diesel Fuel Price” Surveys, which are sponsored by the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) of the U.S. Department of Energy. NORC is collecting data on the cash price of self-serve, conventional, and reformulated motor gasoline and self-serve, motor vehicle diesel fuel from a nationally representative panel of gas stations on a weekly basis. The gasoline and diesel surveys enable EIA to provide stakeholders with weekly gasoline and diesel pump prices each Monday (Tuesday, if Monday is a government holiday).
The EIA-878, "Motor Gasoline Price Survey" and EIA-888 "On-Highway Diesel Fuel Price Survey" are nationally prominent efforts in the energy data field. NORC makes available several choices of survey mode for each respondent, allowing them to choose which mode they would prefer. These modes of data collection include: Computer-Assisted Telephone Interview (CATI), web survey, fax, manual retrieval from company website (for selected diesel fuel providers) and email.
The weekly motor gasoline and diesel fuel price surveys will enhance NORC's relationship with the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), a key client of the Economics, Justice, and Society department. These surveys offer an opportunity to develop and enhance our knowledge with the use of the Voxco® case management system. Voxco® provides the capability of integrating web, outbound CATI, and inbound capabilities in a multi-mode data collection system. The EIA-878 and EIA-888 surveys represent NORC’s capabilities to conduct short turn-around cost-effective surveys using a fully multi-mode data collection strategy.
The EIA-878, "Motor Gasoline Price Survey" and EIA-888, "On-Highway Diesel Fuel Price Survey" data are used to monitor changes in both gasoline and motor vehicle diesel fuel prices and to report to Congress and others when requested. The EIA-878 data findings are also used by EIA to monitor trends in gasoline markets and to analyze price impacts of new legislative requirements.
