Booth School of Business Climate Study 2019-2020

A survey of inclusiveness and well-being among Booth PhD students and Research Professionals.

Colleges and universities strive to create an equitable and inclusive campus environment because it contributes to the success and retention of their students. In recent years, many schools have studied the climate on their campuses. Because that climate often varies by department or program, some schools have identified a need for more focused studies at those levels. These studies can provide programs and departments with fine-grained information needed to inform policies that are not always applicable to the school at-large.

NORC is partnering with the Booth School of Business at the University of Chicago to conduct an in-depth climate study of its PhD and Research Professional programs. Unlike other climate studies that survey only current students, the Booth climate study will survey:

  1. Current Booth PhD students
  2. Booth PhD alumni/ae who matriculated in 2000 or later
  3. Booth PhD students who entered the program in 2000 or later and did not complete a degree
  4. Booth PhD applicants who were admitted in 2000 or later but declined the offer
  5. Current Booth research professionals

The diverse study population will allow NORC to conduct comparative analysis between current students and other key groups. NORC will survey each group in four core topic areas, including advising, discrimination and harassment, stress and well-being, and general department climate that includes campus and department-specific resources. (Admitted PhD applicants who declined Booth’s offer will be asked about other PhD programs they may have attended.) The size of the study population, across all groups, is about 1,000 individuals.

Data collection for the Booth Climate study will take place in early 2020. NORC will analyze the results of the survey and provide a final report to the Booth School, which will use the information to assess and improve the climate within its program.
