NORC at the University of Chicago Senior Statistician Edward J. Mulrow Honored as New American Statistical Association Fellow

Press Release

BETHESDA, Md., June 16, 2014 — Edward J. Mulrow has been named a Fellow of the American Statistical Association (ASA). The ASA is the nation’s preeminent professional statistical society. Mulrow was honored for sustained statistical leadership and creative solutions in contentious consulting situations; for effective assistance to U.S. governmental agencies in addressing challenging data collection and analysis issues; and for advancing statistical excellence in mentoring junior team members.

“This recognition is well-deserved in light of Ed’s work and contributions.  We congratulate him on this honor,” said Ken Copeland, senior vice president and director of the Statistics and Methodology program.

Mulrow will be awarded a certificate at a ceremony on August 5 at the annual Joint Statistical Meetings in Boston, Massachusetts.

“I am honored to be selected as an ASA fellow alongside a group of outstanding statistical practitioners and thought leaders,” said Mulrow. “The ASA is one of the world’s leading statistical societies and I appreciate that such an organization recognizes the value of the work I have done throughout my career. As is often the case with such recognition, I have received help from a number of colleagues, including my co-workers at NORC.”

According to the ASA, “The designation of ASA Fellow has been a significant honor for nearly 100 years. Under ASA bylaws, the Committee on Fellows can elect up to one-third of one percent of the total membership as fellows each year. Individuals are nominated by their peers in the association membership. To be honored, nominees must have an established reputation and have made outstanding contributions in statistical science.”
