Kevin Deardorff

Kevin is a nationally recognized expert in the use of administrative and commercial data to create statistics.

Kevin is a senior fellow in NORC’s Economics, Justice & Society department. He previously worked at the U.S. Census Bureau for 33 years, serving in the Senior Executive Service for the past 11 years. Kevin was responsible for producing the official population estimates of the United States by age, sex, race, and ethnicity.  He was also responsible for using independent administrative records to evaluate the coverage of these official population estimates compared with counts from the Decennial Census of Population and Housing. Kevin presented these findings at professional conferences both nationally and internationally, becoming a leading advocate for using alternative data sources to estimate levels of international migration to the United States. He chaired the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) Committee on Migration Statistics, where the focus of international collaborations was on exploring new methodologies in this discipline. In addition, Kevin used administrative efforts to significantly reduce in-field data collection for the 2020 Census nonresponse follow-up operations.

Kevin led efforts at the Census Bureau to provide international assistance to countries building their capacity to take demographic, economic, and agricultural surveys and censuses. His capacity-building efforts included electronic data collection, enhanced data processing, use of GIS technology, and improved data analysis designed for program evaluation.

Kevin also expanded the development and analysis of business data for the United States. He led ongoing efforts to collect the Economic Census and the Census of Governments in the United States and created new business data products such as the Annual Survey of Entrepreneurs, the Annual Business Survey, and Non-Employer Statistics by Demographics.
