NORC Launches Next Round of Diversity, Racial Equity, and Inclusion Scholars Program

Applications will be accepted until May 29, 2022


CHICAGO, April 18, 2022 – NORC at the University of Chicago is now accepting applications for its 2022 Diversity, Racial Equity, and Inclusion (DREI) Scholars Program, an opportunity for early career scholars to conduct research on diversity, disparities, equity, and inclusion. The program provides awardees a chance to work on a secondary data analysis project under the supervision of NORC expert staff, build skills, and participate in a robust mentoring and career networking program.

NORC is funding up to four scholars external to NORC and two scholars who are NORC employees in 2022. Applications are due by midnight CT on Sunday, May 29, 2022. The awardees will be announced shortly after the application period ends and the 6-month program will begin in June. Each scholar will be provided support for their time. The estimated time commitment is approximately one day per week. Research scholars will use existing NORC datasets and conduct secondary data analyses to inform programs, policies, and services that promote diverse populations’ social and economic well-being in the United States.

“With our second cohort of Diversity, Racial Equity, and Inclusion Scholars, NORC is excited to build on the work and successes of the inaugural 2021 DREI Scholars program participants, deepening our commitment to racial equity and fostering the next generation of data research scientists focused on ensuring an equity-focused lens to their research,” said Michael López, vice president in the Education & Child Development department at NORC. “It is critically important that we diversify the field of academic research, but it is not enough just to create opportunities. We must mentor young aspirants in academia to ensure they have the necessary skills and collaborative networks to have long, successful careers, which is what our program aims to do.”

NORC is interested in funding diversity, disparities, equity, and inclusion-focused research that has at least one of the following aims: 

  1. Describe how structures and other societal contexts frame the experiences of diverse individuals in the United States. 
  2. Understand strengths within diverse communities in the United States that promote success and well-being. 
  3. Identify important within-group variation that is key for enhancing programs in diverse communities in the United States.
  4. Examine how racism affects racially and ethnically diverse communities and individuals in the United States.

Eligibility requirements for applicants include:

  1. A strong documented interest in research topics related to diversity, disparities, equity, and inclusion.
  2. Research or professional training and experience related to diversity, disparities, equity, and inclusion.
  3. Scholars from populations historically underrepresented in research and academic fields and those from Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Hispanic Serving Institutions, and Minority Serving Institutions are strongly encouraged to apply.
  4. Applicants do not need to be U.S. citizens.
  5. Additional education and industry experience requirements can be found in the calls for DREI Scholar applicants.
