    Mortgage Demand in Indonesia

Under contract to the International Finance Corporation (IFC), NORC conducted a survey of about 1,300 urban households planning to purchase a dwelling in the next three years.  The sample was drawn from three groups of probable purchasers: room or unit renters, a nuclear family within a larger household, and current homeowners planning to purchase a larger or better home.  The IFC was interested in would-be home purchasers' preferences for different loan features, particularly loan term length, loan-to-value ratio, and variable vs. fixed interest rate.

Conducted in seven major cities in Indonesia, the survey collects detailed information on family characteristics including sources of income, the family's experience with formal financial institutions, and the characteristics of the dwelling it plans to purchase. NORC and its local partner have designed and piloted a survey instrument, trained survey teams, and are now collected and processed the data.  NORC is now preparing the analytic report on the survey's findings.
