National Longitudinal Study of No Child Left Behind

The National Longitudinal Study of No Child Left Behind (NLS-NCLB) is examining the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB), currently the preeminent legislation in national education reform. NCLB is based on several principles, including: stronger accountability; greater flexibility in use of federal funds for states, school districts and schools; more educational alternatives for parents of children from disadvantaged backgrounds; and greater emphasis on teaching methods that have been proven effective.

NORC is subcontracted to RAND and the American Institutes for Research (AIR) and is responsible for gaining the cooperation of the districts, schools and respondents as well as the overall data collection. The NLS-NCLB gathered data via paper and pencil surveys (PAPI) from district administrators, principals, teachers, parents, school paraprofessionals, and supplemental educational services.

The first round of NLS-NCLB data collection began in the fall of 2004 and the second round will end in mid-2007. This study will be the main source of information for the U.S. Department of Education on how districts and schools are addressing the provisions of the NCLB Act.
