Tom W. Smith Awarded the 2011 Warren E. Miller Award for Meritorious Service to the Social Sciences

​CHICAGO, August 2, 2011 - The Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR) announced today that Tom W. Smith has been awarded the 2011 Warren E. Miller Award for Meritorious Service to the Social Sciences. Smith is a NORC Senior Fellow, Director of the Center for the Study of Politics and Society, and since 1980 has served as Director of the General Social Survey (GSS), one of NORC's most visible projects and one fo the nation's most heavily utilized datasets.

This award was initiated in 1993 to recognize individuals who have had a profound impact on social science research and infrastructure. The award is named for Warren E. Miller, a founder of the Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research at the Institute for Social Research/University of Michigan and its first Executive Director, who demonstrated throughout his career exemplary service to the social science community and a talent for building institutions that have survived beyond his direct involvement and continue to prosper.
