Press Release

Rene Bautista, PhD, senior research methodologist at the independent research organization NORC at the University of Chicago, has been named associate editor of the journal Public Opinion Quarterly (POQ).

POQ is the flagship journal of the American Association for Public Opinion Research. The journal publishes cutting-edge research in public opinion theory and methods.

“I am pleased and honored to be selected associate editor,” said Bautista. “It represents an opportunity to serve the field and to work with those dedicated to promoting the highest scientific and ethical standards guiding the work that we do.”

“We are delighted to have Rene join our editorial team this year,” said Patricia Moy of the University of Washington, co-editor of the journal. “He will bring to POQ significant expertise in key methods-related areas such as nonresponse, measurement error, and advanced statistical analyses. I am deeply grateful for Rene’s commitment to upholding POQ’s standards of excellence.”

Bautista will serve a four-year term as associate editor, effective July 1. In taking on the editor’s role, he continues a tradition of NORC leadership for POQTom W. Smith, senior fellow at NORC and director of the General Social Survey, is stepping down at the end of June after his four-year term as co-editor with Moy. Eric Plutzer of Pennsylvania State University is his successor.

As associate editor, Bautista will share in the responsibility of overseeing the journal’s intellectual content. He will work with authors, reviewers, and his POQ colleagues to ensure the publication of theoretically and methodologically rigorous research. The associate editor role is a volunteer position that Bautista will hold in addition to his professional responsibilities at NORC.

“The selection of Rene for this role at Public Opinion Quarterly is a testament to the quality and import of his work and the high regard in which he is held by his peers,” said Kennon R. Copeland, senior vice president and director of the Statistics and Methodology department at NORC.

At NORC, Bautista’s research on survey methodology focuses on nonresponse, measurement error, interviewer effects, and survey data collection methods. He has participated in the evaluation of programs conducted by the Census Bureau, the U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics, and the Office of Planning, Research and Evaluation within the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, among others. He is also a lecturer at the University of Chicago Harris School of Public Policy, where he teaches the Survey Questionnaire Design course. His work has been published in scholarly journals and books, and he is a frequent speaker at major national and international conferences on survey methodology.

A native of Mexico, Bautista is a graduate of the Instituto Tecnologico Autonomo de Mexico, with an MS and PhD in survey research and methodology from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

“I am pleased and honored to be selected associate editor. It represents an opportunity to serve the field and to work with those dedicated to promoting the highest scientific and ethical standards guiding the work that we do.”
