Donsig Jang Named Vice President and Director of the Center for Excellence in Survey Research at NORC at the University of Chicago

Press Release

CHICAGO, Nov. 1, 2016 – Donsig Jang, PhD, joined NORC at the University of Chicago as vice president and director of the Center for Excellence in Survey Research (CESR). Jang brings to NORC over 20 years’ experience in managing and directing large-scale national federal statistical projects and methodological research associated with federal statistics programs. He has broad experience across all aspects of statistics, including multivariate statistical modeling, data linkage of multiple survey and administrative data, statistical disclosure avoidance, adaptive survey design, real-time survey data processing, sampling, estimation, and report and datafile production.

“Don Jang’s extensive experience in many of the most technical and challenging aspects of data science will be of enormous value to NORC as we continue to develop and grow our analytic capabilities and offerings,” said Dan Gaylin, president and CEO of NORC. “We are very pleased that he is joining us.”

At NORC, Jang will be responsible for management of all staff and operations in the CESR department, building and leading NORC’s data analytics team.

“In the rapidly expanding world of data analytics, it is important to ensure statistical rigor bridged with machine learning algorithms and to press the search for new directions in the field,” said Jang. “NORC is continuously innovating to respond to these challenges. It will be very rewarding to be a part of that effort.”

Before joining NORC, Jang was director of data science and statistics at Mathematica Policy Research, where he managed about 50 statisticians and data scientists responsible for building a full range of statistical and advanced analytics capabilities. He also led all statistical tasks for the Scientists and Engineers Statistical Data System project, a database that integrates data collected through three national sample surveys supported by the National Science Foundation: the National Survey of College Graduates, the Survey of Doctorate Recipients, and the National Survey of Recent College Graduates.

Jang holds a PhD in statistics from Texas A&M University.

“Don Jang’s extensive experience in many of the most technical and challenging aspects of data science will be of enormous value to NORC as we continue to develop and grow our analytic capabilities and offerings.”
