April 2, 2007 - Researchers from Johns Hopkins University analyzed data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth (NLSY) mother-child survey supplement to determine that household instability has a negative effect on children's behavior. The findings, reported in the Johns Hopkins Gazette and elsewhere, were first published in the American Sociological Review, 72(2):181-204. The analysis also found that the effect of family upheaval on children varies by race.
NORC collects data for the NLSY 1979 cohort and its mother-child survey supplement, which obtains information on the biological children of the female members of the 1979 cohort. The supplement has created an extraordinarily rich dataset on child development.
