California Gambling Study Reports One Million Problem Gamblers

The governor’s office of the State of California released a new study on January 30, 2007 on the prevalence of compulsive gambling in the state.  NORC conducted the survey of 7,000 adults for the study. The study results are expected to inform policymakers of the extent of problem gambling as it considers whether and how it might limit future gambling. The Desert Sun (Palm Springs, CA) published a story on January 31, 2007 and a related story that mentions NORC specifically.  The Press-Enterprise Inland News and the San Diego Union Tribune also covered the event.  Rachel Volberg, a senior research associate in the Substance Abuse, Mental Health, and Criminal Justice department, was quoted in several of the stories.  She is considered one of the nation’s foremost experts on gambling addiction.  The full report is now available on the California Office of Problem Gambling website, here.
