Black Youth Culture Survey Informs Hip Hop Lyrics Debate

Pop music critic Kevin C. Johnson wrote an April 18, 2007 entertainment column for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch about the recent debate sparked by radio personality Don Imus’ derogatory comments towards the Rutgers University women’s basketball team. In the story, Johnson referred to the Black Youth Project headed by the University of Chicago’s Dr. Cathy Cohen and the Black Youth Culture Survey, conducted by NORC as part of the study. Specifically, he noted that the survey findings suggest black youth think rap music portrays women in offensive ways. Read more about the project on the NORC website and at www.blackyouthproject.com.
